Boho Maxi Dress Minus the Cultural Appropriation

It’s that time of year again: festival season.  Yay?!  Oh, and that was sarcasm.  I personally loathe the fashion trends that seem to recycle every festival season because not only is it boring and blazé but most of the time cultural appropriation rears it’s ugly head in the attempt to look festival chic.

Each year we read the same articles about how ridiculous and outrageous it is for people to be so unaware of the their lack of knowledge when it comes to cultural appropriation.

The ignorant excuse of “I didn’t know!” is unacceptable.

How many articles does Buzzfeed, Refiner29, TeenVogue or the Huntington Post have to publish in order for the general public to get the point?!  It’s just not cool to appropriate a culture by wearing significant cultural garb as a fashion statement when you rock out to Beyoncé at Coachella.

It’s not just Black culture that falls victim to this every year but also Native American and South Asian cultures.  Groups of naive and ignorant people don braids, feathered headpieces, third eyes and tribal paint in order to look “cool” or “edgy” with no thought or care of the people that have been historically subjected to gross mistreatment for just being who they are.

So yes, wearing a this boho style maxi from River Island is totally chic and practical for this festival season; just leave the face paint and headdress at home.

But back to the fashion.

You can wear this dress on or off the shoulders.

I chose on.  I just wasn’t willing to bare skin that hasn’t been kissed by Rihanna’s Body Lava.

I seriously need all the glow RiRi is willing to bestow on us this season.  With that Body Lava all over I’ll be ready to show out in all of my RI sundresses.

  1. Love the total look. FYI, found that ‘must-have’ bamboo purse at Amazon for $40! Whoohoo, lucky me!
