Blue jeans are as all-American as baseball, Coca-Cola and summertime BBQs—or are they? Believe it or not, your beloved dungarees actually have French origins. Sacre bleu!
The word “denim” is actually derived from the French term serge de Nîmes, or “serge from Nîmes.” Serge is a type of sturdy, ridged twill fabric, and the French city of Nîmes was known for its textiles—and was churning out indigo pants long before Levi’s.
Meanwhile, the term “jeans” stems from Gênes, the French word for the city of Genoa, Italy—where the first denim pants were actually produced. Who knew our favorite blues had European roots?
Below, I’m wearing a pair of Charlotte Russe’s new and improved high-waisted skinny jeans. I’m 5’4 and the hem line falls a little past my ankles with little bunching. I’m wearing a size 20 and they are snug but with a few wears will fit just right.
Pro tip: When shopping for skinnies, opt for a size smaller than what you’d usually choose. They’ll be uncomfortable for the first few wears, but will soon stretch to the perfect fit. Too many times, I’ve bought skinny jeans in my true size, only to have them turn saggy and baggy after a couple of hours! Not the look I was going for.
